Copyright protects work from using by another person. Copyright is the exclusive right of the author. And what do you know about related rights? We will talk about this in our today’s article.
In all countries, there are copyright and related rights laws that vary from one to another.
In Armenia, related rights are regarded as a separate category of rights since 1996 in accordance with the Act Copyright and Copyright Related Rights.
For example, if the author of melody and lyrics of any song is considered one person and the song is performed by another, then the music and lyrics of the song are protected by copyright, and the performance is protected with the related rights.
The related right ensures:
- Performers’ rights (singer, actor, conductor, etc.)
- Producers’ rights of phonograms and films
- Rights of Broadcasting Companies
- Rights of Publishers
Copyright gives businesses the opportunity to:
Supervise original works and protect it from possible use, from copying, if it is done for revenue.
Use as revenue: This means that the author may use the work as a pledge.
Take measures against violations: If the creator of the work notices any copyright infringement, it may be banned by its exclusive right.
The main document for copyright protection is the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works (1886). In 1996, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) adopted the Copyright Treaty.
It is recommended to consult with copyright and related rights experts before making any important decision regarding copyright.
